Money for videos and stories. How Facebook monetization works and how much you can earn

Facebook has started paying Ukrainians not only for videos. Now, money can also be earned for texts, photos, and stories. But along with new opportunities came risks: incorrect settings can leave you without payments or even disable monetization altogether.Who really gets money from Meta and for what, why some authors see income in a few weeks while others wait for months, and what mistakes can cost all monetization – we're figuring out how the updated Facebook program works for Ukrainian users.How to enable monetization Ukraine and the Ukrainian language are in official a list of countries and languages for which monetization is available on Facebook. This is not an innovation; monetization existed before, but it was only for videos and had high requirements for the number of subscribers and views. In 2024, Facebook updated the monetization program has been updated and made more accessible to users. However, the program has not yet been fully launched and is currently in beta testing.It is not possible to enable the monetization program on your own. You need to wait for an invitation from Facebook. The social network sent out the first invitations to millions of creators in October 2024."Invitations will come from official internal Facebook or Meta channels, including through the Facebook app, Meta Business Suite, and the Professional Dashboard," Facebook writes.There is no exact number of subscribers or views required to enable the program. Most often, such invitations are received by those who have more than 1000 subscribers and regularly create unique and high-quality content. Regularly means at least four to five pieces of content per week. This was stated in a comment LIGA.net says Nadiia Raiushkina, a marketer and Facebook researcher in Ukraine."There are no specific deadlines for when you can receive an invitation to enable the monetization program for your account. Nadiya Rayushkina says that, for example, in Reels, the social network pays for the use of licensed music, so it's worth accompanying videos with music from the Facebook library."On average, for an adult audience, it's now one to one and a half hryvnias per 1,000 impressions. That is, for a post seen by 100,000 people, you can earn about 100-150 hryvnias ($2.35–$3.52). It's about the same with Reels," says Rayushkina.Getting 100,000 views on a Facebook video is not as difficult as it may seem, because the social network tries to show original content to those who are not subscribed to you. But posting videos is not mandatory, and you can certainly be a text blogger.Meta only pays out funds once the minimum amount of $100 has been accumulated. If the income for the previous month is less, the funds are not paid out but are carried over to the next period until the threshold is reached.In addition, the platform periodically offers bonus programs. For example, a conditional offer: earn $250 within a specified period and receive an additional bonus of $50. This was stated by Lesya Panteleimonova, Head of Integrated Communications Department, LIGA.net."Video content, especially Reels, brings in the most revenue," says Panteleimonova.Revenue in Reels is determined not by the scale of attention, but by the depth of interaction. Meta pays for content that is saved, shared, and watched for longer. Saves are a key indicator of direct impact on revenue. The second most important indicator is shares. But it only works in conjunction with saves."A post with over 400 shares and 100 saves can bring in over $22, while a post with the same number of shares but around 40 saves will only bring in about $4.5," Lesya Panteleimonova cites the calculations.Comments, views, likes, and clicks do not directly affect monetization, but they increase the popularity of the post, allowing more people to interact with it.According to Panteleimonova's observations, a combination of factors works with photos: people stop at the post, read it, comment on it, and share it. For example, a photo with 500 comments and 30 shares can bring in a little more than $4, while another with 300 comments and 130 shares can bring in over $13.Read also"The P2P segment has shrunk." Errors in the settings can lead not only to payment delays but also to a complete shutdown of monetization.Even with correctly submitted documents, setting up payments for a legal entity proved to be complex and confusing. This was stated by Lesya Panteleimonova, Head of Integrated Communications Department, LIGA.net."Setting up to receive payments is quite a quest," she says, adding that for a long time, a message about "necessary actions from the administrator" was displayed in the user's Facebook account, without explanation or any real way to change anything. Only after contacting Meta's support service did it turn out that the funds had already been transferred to the bank. But the notification itself remains active to this day.The key point is the country of residence and the correctly chosen payment method. If the content creator is in Ukraine and has received an invitation to the content monetization program, payments only work through an account in a Ukrainian bank.A PayPal account registered with a Ukrainian phone number can be formally specified, but funds will not actually be received on it. The best option is to open a foreign currency account (IBAN) in dollars. This is according to marketer Nadiya Rayushkina.At the same time, the expert warns against using Oschadbank accounts. According to her, this bank requires a contract for foreign economic activity, which Meta does not provide. Because of this, funds may get "stuck"."I haven't encountered such problems with other Ukrainian banks yet – payments are credited on time," notes Rayushkina.There is a separate risk for Ukrainians who are currently abroad. Meta offers them the "Stars" monetization program, which is not available in Ukraine. However, if any Ukrainian details are provided during the payment setup – from a phone number to a bank account – the platform automatically changes the profile country and disables the monetization program."In fact, people are simply losing monetization," explains Rayushkina. In this case, a safe option is PayPal, registered not to a Ukrainian phone number.Another important nuance: you should set up payments via the desktop version, not the mobile app, which often doesn't allow you to complete the process.As for taxes, sole proprietors in the third group usually do not have problems if they have the relevant NACE codes. Individuals will have to pay personal income tax and military levy themselves and submit an annual declaration.How much can you earnThe Liga editorial team received a notification about the possibility of monetizing content on Facebook around mid-summer. They immediately submitted an application for it."The process was as simple as possible: joining the waiting list took literally a few seconds. The message immediately stated the launch date – August 2025," says Lesya Panteleimonova. Accordingly, since the beginning of August, Meta has started accruing revenue for published content.Nadiia Raiushkina received an invitation and joined the program in the spring of 2025, and has been monetizing her content ever since."Since enabling monetization in late April 2025, I've earned a little over $170 and have already received my first payout," says the marketer.But for her, monetization is more of a pleasant bonus than a source of income, especially while the entire program is in beta testing and there are no clear announced requirements and rules.
